SUMMARY:The 14th Amendment
DESCRIPTION:The 14th Amendment\nThe 14th Amendment is arguably the most important political development of the post-bellum United States. Historians\, legal scholars\, lawyers\, and judges have debated its meaning and intent. Many of our current political debates center on the Amendment\, from immigration to the powers of the central government. In many respects\, the 14th Amendment has become the Constitution. Some judges and scholars classify themselves as “14th Amendment originalists” today. \nBut are modern interpretations of the Amendment correct? We’ll review the history of the Amendment\, its application\, meaning\, and intent\, and how it impacts America today. \nThe conference fee covers all lectures\, the lecture on Friday\, October 3\, and lunch and supper on Saturday\, October 4. Attire is business casual during the day. Evening meals and lectures require coat and tie for gentlemen and cocktail dresses for ladies.  \nConfirmed Speakers: Brion McClanahan\, William Watkins\, Joe Wolverton\, Jesse Merriam\, Marshall DeRosa\, Jeffrey Addicott\, Eric Neff\, and Ryan Walters. \nTentative schedule: \nFriday\, October 3: \n7:00-8:00: Brion McClanahan \n8:00- Conviviality \nSaturday\, October 4: \nBreakfast on your own (complimentary for guests staying in the hotel) \n9:00-10:00: Jeffrey Addicott \n10:00-11:00: Ryan Walters \n11:00-12:00: Joe Wolverton \n12:00-1:00: Lunch \n1:00-2:00: Eric Neff \n2:00-3:00: William Watkins \n3:00-4:00: Jesse Merriam \n4:00-5:00: Q&A \n6:00-7:00: Supper \n7:00-8:00: Marshall DeRosa \n8:00- Conviviality \nSunday\, October 5: \nCheckout \nRegistration:\n\n\nRegistration is now closed.\nLodging:\nConference guests can book a room at the Columbus Marriott with the group discount. SUMMARY:The Declaration and Decentralization
DESCRIPTION:The Declaration and Decentralization\nJefferson’s Declaration of Independence celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026\, and no document is more misunderstood and misrepresented in American history. For many Americans\, the Declaration symbolizes the “proposition nation” that “all men are created equal.” But the real key to understanding the Declaration is the final paragraph which established thirteen “free and independent States.” The “compact fact” has always been the key to understanding American history. But what does this mean for the 21st century? Federalism\, secession\, nullification\, and decentralization are constantly in the news cycle in the last year. Canadian provinces are seeking to secede; Democratic governors are thumbing their nose at the Trump administration; secession movements in Texas and California continue to receive news coverage; nullification and the 10th Amendment are dusted off in opposition to federal overreach. In other words\, the living Declaration is alive and well in North America. \nThat won’t be the story during the celebration of the document by the establishment. You’ll be spoon fed the proposition nation myth\, told that Lincoln’s version of American history is vital for “making America great again”\, and that the Declaration forms the basis of American conservatism. \nAt least in one respect\, it does\, but not the way the Republican Party (or Democratic Party) would like to suggest. \nWe’ll review the history of the Declaration\, its application\, meaning\, and intent\, and how it impacts America today. We’ll also spend half a day in Montgomery\, the “Cradle of the Confederacy”. If you’ve never toured the original capital of the Confederate States of America\, visited the first “White House of the Confederacy”\, or seen the star where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office\, this will be a lot of fun. You can also visit Hank Williams’s grave site if you wish among other landmarks. \nThe conference fee covers all lectures and lunch and supper on Friday and Saturday March 20 and 21. Attire is business casual during the day. Evening meals and lectures require coat and tie for gentlemen and cocktail dresses for ladies.  \nSchedule \nThursday\, March 19 \n3:00-5:00: Check-in \n7:00-8:00: Brion McClanahan \n8:00- Conviviality \nFriday\, March 20: \nBreakfast on your own  \n9:00-9:45: John Devanny \n10:00-10:45: M. SUMMARY:Reconsidering John C. Calhoun
DESCRIPTION:Reconsidering John C. Calhoun\nJohn C. Calhoun is arguably the most controversial political figure in American history. No one invites the same amount of criticism from both the left and the right as Calhoun. He has been labeled the “cast iron man\,” the “defender of slavery\,” the “Marx of the Master Class\,” and is routinely blamed for “Secession Winter” of 1860-61\, an event that took place over a decade after his death. Calhoun destroyed the Union for the rule of oligarchic slaveowners\, at least the mainstream narrative contends. \nThe real Calhoun is far different. Calhoun always considered himself to be a Unionist\, avoided threatening secession until it appeared that the Union was irreparably broken\, was s charming conversationalist and dedicated father and husband\, and more importantly a republican statesman who defended the interests of his constituents and highlighted potential dangers long before they threatened the political fabric of the United States. He was a prophet without honor even in his own time. \nThis conference will explore the real Calhoun. Join us for lively discussions and lectures on Calhoun\, his life\, his political philosophy\, and his legacy in the 21st century. \nThe Conference fee covers breakfast\, lunch\, and supper February 26 and 27 along with snacks and refreshments during the day. We will have special events and presentations during our sessions. Information forthcoming. \nAttire is business casual during the day. Evening meals and lectures require coat and tie for gentlemen and cocktail dresses for ladies. Confirmed speakers: Brion McClanahan\, Don Livingston\, Ryan Walters\, William Watkins\, Karol Mazur\, Bill Wilson\, Joe Wolverton\, John Devanny\, Marco Bassani\, Aaron Coleman\, Clyde Wilson \nAgenda forthcoming. \nPreliminary Schedule:\nFebruary 25: Check in–Local Conviviality. \nFebruary 26: 8:00-9:00: Breakfast; 9:00-12:00: Lectures/Events; 12:00-1:00: Lunch; 1:00-5:00: Lectures/Events; 6:00-7:00: Supper; 7:30-8:30: Lecture; 8:30-Conviviality \nFebruary 27: 8:00-9:00: Breakfast; 9:00-12:00: Lectures/Events; 12:00-1:00: Lunch; 1:00-5:00: Lectures/Events; 6:00-7:00: Supper; 7:30-8:30: Lecture; 8:30-Conviviality \nFebruary 28: Check out \n\n\nRegistration:\nThe conference fee is $499 for individuals and $899 for couples. Tickets are available for purchase through January 24\, 2027. SUMMARY:The Deep North
DESCRIPTION:The Deep North\nIn the 1970s\, many colleges and universities started creating “Southern Studies” programs aimed at understanding Southern cultural distinctiveness. The point was clear. The South represented something unique in American life. Graduate students in the humanities\, fine arts\, and social sciences began studying this thing known as the “South.” It became a specimen\, a curiosity\, a “peculiar” other in American life\, and Northern scholars flooded Southern schools and their “Southern Studies” programs to help Southerners better understand themselves and the so-called “Deep South.” \nBut what if this narrative flipped America on its head? What if the real “peculiar” section in American history wasn’t the South\, but the North? What if Southerners were the quintessential “American” for most of American history\, and the real section that needed special attention was the “Deep North”? \nA cursory review of the collective past points in this direction. New Englanders first threatened to secede in 1794 because they seemed out of place in the new general government. They threatened again several times before the 1850s. Abolitionism and other reform movements were met with hostility around the United States and were run out of town in most places\, but because the North won the War\, these reformers are treated as the “normal” Americans in the story. Northern political leaders are heroes in a struggle to “save” American principles from “oligarchic” Southerners. \nThis historical distortion has greatly affected American society and needs to be addressed. \nJoin us for lively discussions and lectures on “The Deep North\,” and its impact on American society and education. \nThe Conference fee covers breakfast\, lunch\, and supper on October 9 with snacks and refreshments during the day. \nAgenda and Speakers forthcoming. \nPreliminary Schedule:\nOctober 8: Check in–Local Conviviality. \nOctober 9: 8:00-9:00: Breakfast; 9:00-12:00: Lectures/Events; 12:00-1:00: Lunch; 1:00-5:00: Lectures/Events; 6:00-7:00: Supper; 7:30-8:30: Lecture; 8:30-Conviviality \nOctober 10: Check out \n\n\nRegistration:\nThe conference fee is $259 for individuals and $499 for couples. Tickets are available for purchase through September 1\, 2027. Cancellations made on or after September 1\, 2027 will not receive a refund. \nGuests are encouraged to register ONLINE by clicking HERE. You can also mail a check to PO BOX 1870\, Auburn\, AL 36831-1870. Rooms are $175 per night plus taxes and fees. The last day to book a room is September 8\, 2027 and is subject to availability.
