The following is an abridged summary of the first three chapters of Dixie in Decay (and How to Heal Her) by Elias John Ryan
Dixie is in decay. Our tradition of self governance is being flattened by an overreaching federal government. A once vibrant culture is being overridden by technology and mass immigration. Our economy is being corrupted by crony corporate interests. The land our forefathers farmed is being poisoned en masse by careless carpetbaggers. These problems and many more are dealing great damage to our homeland. There is, however, an even greater threat to Dixie than any of these. The greatest threat facing the Southern Homeland and Tradition is the rotting of the Southerner himself. While the troubles plaguing the Southerner are numerous and seemingly inevitable there are three struggles well within his control that keep him shackled to a depressed mediocrity. The three primary challenges ahead of the southerner are obesity, a lack of strength and cardiovascular endurance, and addiction. It was once said in the great literary classic Gone with the Wind that “One Southerner could lick twenty yankees!”. This confidence in the toughness and ability of the average Rebel was a large part of the confidence southern leadership had in their secession effort. If the southerner of the mid 19th century had the robustness of his flabby and weak descendant in the modern south, such a revolutionary effort would have never been conjured up. To solve the problems that decay Dixie, we must liberate ourselves from the shackles of our own flesh.
Obesity, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), is having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of greater than 30kg/m^2. BMI is not a flawless metric as it begins to lose precision at extreme heights and musculatures but it shall serve as a reasonable starting point for our purposes. Using the CDC’s metrics, a man who stands at 5’9 (the average height of an American man) who weighs 203 pounds or more would be categorized as obese. How many men do you know who meet that standard? If you are reading from Mississippi 40% of the people you share a home state with are obese. The numbers across the rest of the South are not much better. Below are some disturbing figures.
Obesity as a percentage of population:
Alabama – 38.9%
Arkansas – 38.9%
Florida – 29.6%
Georgia – 35.4%
Kentucky – 37.2%
Louisiana – 39.2%
Mississippi – 40.4%
North Carolina – 34.5%
South Carolina – 34.6%
Texas – 35.6%
Virginia – 32.3%
*Data for the State of Tennessee is insufficient*
Only a single southern state can boast an obesity rate below 30%. According to CDC data, the average obesity rate of the American South is 36%. More than ⅓ of southerners are so overweight that they are considered high risk for Diabetes, Osteoarthritis, Stroke, Sleep Apnea, and many more preventable diseases. Obesity is not merely an aesthetic shortcoming that makes one less desirable on the dating market. To relegate physical fitness to mere appearance is to pridefully misappropriate the blessings God has bestowed upon us. Obesity is the symptom of an undisciplined mind and spirit. To reach a level of body fat so excessive as to be considered obese, one must choose gluttony consistently. Obesity is not an accident. It is much like C.S. Lewis’s famous route to Hell.
“Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one – the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts”.
This is the ethos behind Southern obesity. It is not that the southerner has selected the lifestyle of the obese in some kind of perverse rebellion against beauty standards or societal expectations. Nor have we been victimized by mere circumstance. Rather, the southerner has been dejected and depressed, thus choosing the soft and sloping path toward self destruction.
In 1862 Confederate Major General Stonewall Jackson marched his men 646 miles over the course of 48 days during the now famous Shenandoah Valley Campaign. That is 13.5 miles per day. If your state asked you to do it, in an effort to defend her, could you march 13.5 miles per day for 48 days? Let’s take that one step further. If your own wife’s safety depended on your ability to run a 5k would she survive? Statistically, the answer is likely a resounding no. According to Fitness Network, only 10-15 percent of Americans have ever run 3 or more miles in their life. Our collective cardiovascular shortcomings are not our only handicap in the realm of resistance exercise. Long gone are the days of a rugged self reliant lifestyle that demanded of our bodies pushing, pulling, and laboring generally. If challenged today, could you do 10 pushups? Gymless, a fitness blog and website, reports that only half of Americans can do 10 pushups. Surely, you must be thinking, “all of those soft handed yankees are dragging our numbers down”. I wish that were true. On the contrary, a complex longitudinal study by Nursa created a Fitness Index which used metrics like heart rate, strength metrics, and level of physical strain at work to create a numerical scoring system that plots the relative average fitness of an individual 1 through 10. The average scores of participants were then divided by state. It brings me no joy to report that the top 10 does not include a single southern state. Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi were all among the worst 5. How would you explain to P.G.T. Beauregard that his home state would go on to produce the least impressive people in the entirety of an unathletic nation. Our collective inability to perform physically is an immediate barrier to effectually changing our homeland for the better. We Southerners must conquer our own physical bodies in order to resist tyranny. It is no longer acceptable for us to drown our disappointment in sweet tea or cheap beer from gas stations increasingly owned and operated by foreigners. In times as tumultuous as these it becomes our social responsibility to literally trim the fat and build a muscular foundation on which we can once again erect a beautiful and productive Dixieland.
“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls”. This piece of wisdom comes from the 28th verse of the 25th chapter of the book of Proverbs. Never has it been more painfully pertinent than in the context of addiction in the American South. Despite our reputation for being in the Bible Belt, we constantly exhibit a lack of the fruits of the spirit, especially self control. Let’s take a look at the rates of addiction for various vices sorted by state.
Top 5 rates of cigarette smoking (American Lung Association)
- West Virginia
- Kentucky
- Tennessee
- Oklahoma
- Louisiana
Top 5 rates of Internet porn searches (Soul Refiner)
- Mississippi
- Texas
- Arkansas
- Louisiana
- Tennessee
Top 5 rates of self admitted gambling addiction (WalletHub)
- Nevada
- South Dakota
- Montana
- Mississippi
- Louisiana
These statistics are disturbing for many reasons. Addiction is not only a physical ailment, but a mental and spiritual disease as well. Cigarette smoke fills the southerner’s lungs. Notifications from online sports books nag at his eyes and ears. Pornography depicting young women in vulnerable positions corrupts his soul. All the while, foreign investors and corrupt officials profit from the spiritual enslavement of the descendants of George Washington. Obviously, partaking in a given vice in healthy moderation is not only acceptable, but optimal. I personally enjoy a pipe filled with Virginia Red Leaf tobacco on the porch now and again. It is not occasionally partaking in a given risque activity that warrants contemplation. It is a daily failure to seize agency that results in the crippling of a nation’s people. The Southerner, beaten down by the media, educational institutions, and the Government, has relinquished his control of himself to institutions that hate him. A man addicted is a man forlorn. The Southerner, battered by addictive vices like pornography, has been seized like the proverbial city without walls.
Dixie is in Decay. Every day farmland is paved over. Rivers accumulate trash and pollution. Small businesses shrivel and die. Statues and monuments are torn down. Sovereignty is trampled on. All of these nightmares are tragic enough on their own to justify further analysis. Each of these, however, is a symptom, not a root cause. Our environmental, cultural, legal, and financial failures are symptomatic of the decay of the Southerner himself. The malignant growth of self-pity has metastasized throughout the Southern population and rendered us weak and sickly. This is perfect for the agents of tyranny in both the governmental and corporate realm. Just as hyenas gang up on the slowest and sickliest zebra, crony elite villains jump at the downtrodden Southerner, seeking an easy meal. It is up to us, each of us as individuals, to make the decision to steel ourselves. Before we can entertain conversations about radical political reform or massive cultural restoration, we must reverse the rot within our homes and bodies. Every Southerner has the responsibility to harken unto the wisdom of the Good Book. The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews says it quite succinctly. “Therefore strengthen your hanging hands and feeble knees”. Lose weight. Build your strength. Recover from addiction. These are the first steps on a long journey to heal a decaying Dixie.

Amen and amen. I am one of those who sinned by way of gluttony. In early, February, I was 5’7” and 241 pounds. I was undisciplined in my eating habits. One night, I tried dancing with my wife in our living room and my belly would not let me draw her close. The Holy Spirit talked to me that night and told me my body was not my own, but her’s and the Good Lord’s as well. By that conviction, I now weigh 188 pounds on my way down to 175 and I can hold my wife close again and my body honors the God who made and sustains me. I encourage all Southern men of God to do the same. No drugs, no chemicals not fancy mail order food or medical intervention. Limit what you eat in accordance with the scriptures and Pray. I stand as testimony to the truth that Mr. Ryan speaks of in this article. His words ring home like truth. Thank you Sir for speaking this Word to us. God is using you to bless His people.
Thank you for the kind words. Congratulations on your improvements to your health. You’re doing a service to your household as well as the households across the community. Fortresses are built by many quality bricks. God bless
“Dixie is in decay…The greatest threat facing the Southern Homeland and Tradition is the rotting of the Southerner himself…We Southerners must conquer our own physical bodies in order to resist tyranny.”
Dixie is in decay? Everything is in decay: “Romans 8:22 “…we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”
The greatest threat? The greatest threat is the losing of one’s soul: Mark 8:36 “…what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” John 8:24 “…if ye believe not that I am he (the Saviour), ye shall die in your sins.”
Must conquer our physical bodies. There’s something to be said about that. But what will it profit if a man is persuaded to “correct” thinking about things such as the South’s War for Independence, and not buying the socialist and communist propaganda, and if a person is persuaded to eat better, live better, and get fit, if such a person(s) doesn’t get saved?
Never minding adults for the moment, how many children know, and are reading the Bible (KJB)? Are adults/parents making sure that happens? 2 Timothy 3:15 “…from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
God through our apostle Paul said: “…give attendance to reading.” 1 Tim 4:13. I greatly appreciated reading James I. Robertson’s “Stonewall,” but I think Paul was talking more about the holy scriptures.
Many Jews embarrassed themselves because the Lord Jesus Christ asked them if they ever read the scriptures: Mark 2:25 “…he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did…?”
Matthew 22:29 “…Jesus…said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…”
A Bible teacher from Alabama said in a very matter of fact tone, that the believer ought to be reading through the Bible at least twice a year. How many are even trying to read through it at least once? He said the largest Christian denomination is the church of the “ignorant brethren.”
No? When some folks are told water baptism is not for today, they throw a fit. Tell some that Paul is their apostle, they’ll say something like, “What in the world are you talking about?” Tell some the “Our Father” is not a prayer to be said today, and fists might come out.
North Carolinian Billy Graham said he regretted not reading and studying the Bible more.
I like the South. I’ve enjoyed reading history. I love the different Southern accents and dialects, like the Georgian Charles Stanley. I enjoyed listening to this worker at the Chickamauga Battlefield gift shop. Wonderful Georgian accent.
But the Lord through Paul said we live in an “evil world” and He wants to save men out of it, because among other reasons, gargantuan evil will be coming.
Galatians 1:4 “Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:”
I’m all for healthy living, and having a clearer and more correct understanding of Southern history and whatever else. I’m all for trying to maintain and preserve Southern institutions and property if it’s possible. Just realize, though, what the Creator said: “Who will have all men to be saved and come unto the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Tim 2:4.
You brought up Hebrews 12:12, Elias. Great verse. But how many know and understand the context; what is going on there and what it’s about? Do you know, that it concerns the Jewish remnant when they go through “the time of Jacob’s trouble.”?
Every word you said here is truth Sir. I believe Mr. Ryan was speaking to a particular aspect of the Scripture. It goes without saying we must share the gospel, but we must live it as well. The physical weakness that comes from indulgence opens doors to sickness that can lead to spiritual degradations. They will know us by our love, let them also see us in joyful obedience to all God’s words.

If you’re ever heading south toward Jackson, GA, stop there if you can and visit Hope Bible Church, David O’Steen pastor. And/or look up his teaching on YouTube. He’s among the relative handful who has a pretty good understanding of what’s going on in the Bible.
Or if you’re heading north near Charlotte, if you have time, visit Royal Grace Bible Church in Concord. The pastor there also has a good grasp of what’s going on in the Bible.
“Dixie in Decay” is not just the fault of the individual, hard-working, Southern Americans, though some blame has to be placed for simple stupidity and laziness.
Since the end of the War for Southern Independence, the south has been riven with invaders from my own area of the country, the north. These dishonorable people both civilian and military, subjugated a once proud land that should have remained at the forefront of American society. Both Southern political and sociological constructs were devastated by the repressions that the North placed upon the Southern People.
It is no surprise that most Southern politicians are some of the most corrupt in the nation, such as Governor Abbott of Texas, and the late Senator Graham of South Carolina. This denigration of the Southern political infrastructure has yielded little in terms of hope for a once proud culture.
Nonetheless, instead of recounting what is, maybe The South should rise again and reclaim what should be…
“Nonetheless, instead of recounting what is, maybe The South should rise again and reclaim what should be…”
I agree. But such a reclamation will require the climbing of a steep hill. And steep hills are not climbed by fat men with armed women marching in lockstep pretending to be men. The top of that hill will take the same sinew and strength that carried men up Cemetery Hill in spite of what they faced, along with those wonderful Southern ladies who bore the nursing as well as hardships on the burning homefront.

I agree with you and I worry that our nation is truly lost.
I am not familiar with the educational issues in the South, but up here in the North we have friends who are involved in this profession and to a person they say that the young students have no incentive to think things through and figure out difficult issues. Most students, with the exception of our Asian students, are all doing very poorly with many entering university without the proper training to handle the workloads.
I remember when the New York State Regents examinations were difficult and tough tests. We all studied for weeks in order to get the best grades possible. A friend of mine who tutors for today’s Regents always tells me that they are now the equivalent of simple quizzes that anyone with half a brain could pass.
So up here at least, we went from a tough, successful education system to one which is now a laughing stock.
“So up here at least, we went from a tough, successful education system to one which is now a laughing stock.”
Most public education is a “laughing -stock in my opinion. Much of private education is as well. That stems from an inability to be honest or thorough in research. Just look at so many of the so-called “conservative” private colleges. The so-called conservative talk shows, etc. are either unread or too cowardly to reveal elements that are facts and are hidden in the mischief of presentism and its so-called “conservative” scholars.
Peaceful secession. Now. But I recon the same type of folk that wouldn’t have it before, sure enough won’t let it happen now. Ironic that the communists of the USSR let peaceful secession happen back in 1992. That we still can’t do it lends on to think there is something demonic at work here. Praying for restoration. Exactly 💯
This is a bi partisan issue every Governor should spearhead
Sadly, almost every governor is a politician and not a governor
i was born in a southern capital…raleigh. even back in the 70s we had fun sponsored road races. i participated in them. Strenuous movement lends itself to some degree of health… snapping your back for a company and hoping to get fixed is another issue.
Conditioned air has conquered the South.
Hot air owns the North.
Spot on, Mr. Ryan! Our grievances as Southerners are many and justified!
But REALITY doesn’t care about my feelings or yours; we’ve got to accept what is and move on – not forgetting what was done to us – but determining to make the right choices for ourselves and for our descendants, despite those things . . . and trusting in God, who promises to make all things new (Rev. 21:5).
Thanks for this!
I’m 85 years old. I can see what many younger people cannot, even those who are “mature” (in their late 40s and 50s) and it makes sense of that which this article presents.
This isn’t a matter of “Dixie” at least per se! We cannot expect the youth of today to be anything LIKE earlier generations. Why? Because among the people of earlier generations there was at least some possibility of protection from a vast, overreaching “culture” carried everywhere in everything and at all times for a very specific reason! In my generation ~ I was a lower middle class resident of Queens County, New York City ~ I had little real knowledge or understanding of how “the other side” lived ~ and by that I mean not only the poor, but the more affluent and, most particularly, the very wealthy! My background and hence upbringing was entirely white lower middle class with a working father and a stay-at-home mother. I didn’t expect anything greater nor did I fear anything worse. Personally, I was fortunate to grow up in a home that valued good things ~ books, music, history and a more elevated culture than was available to many in my economic circumstances. But even in the 50s and 60s, that had begun to change. Today, unless one lives in a distinctly limited social group, there is very little “Dixie” or any other “culture” at least among the young. And it’s only going to get worse! Our elites are creating a one-world, global culture. It is not for nothing that Third World people are being forced into the First World to its detriment and possibly its extinction!
Until we understand that the assault is aimed at Western Civilization (North AND South) and Christianity, our concerns about “Dixie” alone will only hasten the demise of everything good everywhere. The End of Oak Street is not just the title of a movie! It may well be a prophesy regard the end of everything we hold dear ~ INCLUDING Dixie!
